Two hospital buildings for Umeå
Just six months from the order being placed to installation of the first building: Cadolto completes a state-of-the-art hospital building for Norrlands Universitetssjukhus, Umeå, Sweden.
Cadolzburg, 08.08.2017 ----- In the past week, Cadolto has erected the first phase of the four-storey extension to the Norrlands Universitetssjukhus in Umeå in the Swedish Province of Västerbottens län. It comprises 70 modules, has a gross floor area of 3,254 m² and was prefabricated with the medical equipment, building services and furniture in place. Thus the first of the two buildings was in position less than six months from the order being placed on 20.01.2017.
Umeå is the largest town in Norrlands and one of the fastest growing in Sweden. The healthcare infrastructure must respond equally quickly to the rapid growth of the town - which is where Cadolto comes in.
The two temporary buildings at the university hospital ensure that the hospital can continue to function during the eight-year renovation programme. In addition to a state-of-the-art post-operative unit, the building houses wards, an ophthalmology clinic and a neurotherapy unit. The new complex will also have an EMC unit (designed as a “Faraday cage”, to shield against electro smog and ensure reliable measurements of brain wave activity). The new hospital buildings have a total of around 70 beds.
Franz-Bernhard Schilberg, B. Eng., Project Manager, Cadolto: “We had only six months in which to complete this complex hospital building including all building services and medical technology systems and then transport the turnkey project by lorry and ship to northern Sweden. This is currently without parallel in the European market.”
All the modules were up to 90 percent prefabricated in Cadolzburg near Nuremberg and transported by lorry to Rostock. The journey then continued by ship to Holmsund in Sweden, where they were stored temporarily, before being transported to the construction site. The last modules for phase two are currently being loaded in Cadolzburg, ready for installation in mid-August.
Malin Viklands, Project Manager, Västerbottens läns landsting (client): “This first temporary building is an important milestone on the way to the successful renovation of our university hospital. We were impressed by Cadolto’s speed in erecting this building and the high level of prefabrication used. We look forward to further commissioning of the project next spring.”
The 4-storey building complex designed by Sweco Architects, Umeå, is linked to the existing building on three levels. The temporary buildings have a total gross floor area of 6,783 m² and comprise 141 modules. Cadolto was responsible for the design, fabrication and erection of the turnkey building. The gross value of the project is 26.1 million euros.
